#6 Good. No reason for large troop presence anymore in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Have a couple special operator teams on hand that can go in to deal with any potential Osama type guy and be done with it.

#7 Saddam, his evil sons and cadre of henchmen have been gone now for nearly 14 years. We've done all we can do for those people.

You're on your own. Have a nice day.

#8 All we need is the base, and sufficient support personnel, that can allow for:

1) cadre and equipment to support quick deployment and recovery of special operations in the region.

2) support of intelligence activities (recon drones, SIGINT)

3) training of the locals

These can be accomplished in the remote airbases near the border with Jordan, and in the Kurdish region, without much need for incursions into urban or even suburban areas in Iraq, where they would be targets for "protests" and local terrs.

That is all that is needed in Iraq, so thats all that should be there in Iraq on a semi-permanent basis. 2000 seems right.

Afghanistan? Maintain the central airbase at Kabul, and use it for the same things. No big ground footprint. "Lease" training range area the way we have training at Graf in Germany, with cadre, but no forward permanent combat elements. Have an attached "tactical" airfield. Make it a 12 month hardship tour. Rotate a battalion sized combat unit there every 6 months for 90 days of "anti-terror" training, like the "big Euro war" training at Graf, and places like 29 Stumps and NTC Fort Irwin. Advantage is climate, no need to worry about environ cleanup lawsuits when we leave, and a most of all a jumping off point for SOC forces.

Problem solved.
