#5 remember, the state sued pg&e into bankruptcy after the last big fire; a fire caused by wires arcing into a stand of brush the state would not let the utility trim.
do not understand why that aspect was nit explored during the trial, but it sucks to be a californian right now ( not really, you vited for the idiots in government so too bad.) buy some candles.

#12 Not the 21st century I was expecting. However...

Looking at the Big Picture, we owe these brave but stupid citizens of California our gratitude. Our Founders envisioned the individual states as little petri dishes where the citizens could test out various political, economic and social ideas.

Californians have asked themselves "What if we do some virtuous but stupid stuff that will eventually reduce the quality of our lives?".
"Gosh, I don't know."
"OK, then. Let's do it!"

tl;dr: Never go full California

#13 And when fires happen anyways on account of illegal campfires and/or underground pot farms, there will be no electricity to manage emergency maneuvers.

This is going to be stupid.

#14 PG&E has been negligent for a long, long time in its maintenance of power lines and the towers that support them. From what I've heard, some of those towers are over 100 years old.

It was originally built in 1919. What failed on PG&E tower at heart of Camp Fire probe?

I mean, it's shameful that they have to take the precaution of shutting off the power but if they didn't and there was another fire like the Camp Fire it would be far worse. You can blame PG&E all you want and you are right to do so. But the California Public Utilities Commission must also accept its share of the blame and that, of course, goes back to the politicians who appoint CPUC commissioners.

In the more recently built parts of California cities, telephone and power lines are buried. Well, you know, those telephone poles and all those wires are unsightly. But in wilderness areas, especially where Santa Ana winds blow up to 60 mph and proper forest management has been set aside in deference to Gaia, burying power lines might be the way to go except for the fact that nobody wants to pay for it.

In the meantime, if you want to live out in the boondocks, you might have to accept some inconveniences.

#19 Should have bought stock in DuraMax.

Generator and gasoline storage tank is a couple dollars. They all get to write off that generator expense from their state taxes or get a credit on their utilities account?

No, I didn't say that with a straight face.

#21 tens of thousands of people have lost all their frozen and refrigerated food and been left in the dark because of decades of deferred maintenance and upgrades to main distribution system, much of which PGE massive cash flow has been used for bonuses and perks. Not a single present of former senior management official has been fired or had pensions revoked. Past infuriating!

Third world conditions as in one county, El Dorado, of which I have direct experience, severely restricted water and sewer use because of lack of power to pumping stations and treatment facilities. So basic services have been disrupted by design to avoid further lawsuit risks. Unbelievable, except, like Detroit, government by Democrats, so what can you expect
