#1 He might get his wish. The EU will not renegotiate and it's not clear at all whether a useless extension will be granted.

Maybe Britain will need to find out the hard way what happens when "the Continent is cut off".

#7 The difference is between the earlier "Trade Compact" EEC, which has many merits, and an "Cabal of Apparatchiks" EU...

#8 I'm just an ignorant colonial, but I thought that when 17 million people checked the box that said "Leave the EU" they were voting to, you know, leave the EU. But apparently "Leave the EU" is a quaint British expression like "and Bob's your uncle", which has nothing to do with anyone named Bob or anyone's uncle. Cockney rhyming slang, perhaps?

#9 Well if you ask a guy whether he's willing to marry and propose him Taylor Swift as the bride, he might say yes but might change his mind if after that you tell him, oops Taylor isn't available after all, it's going to be Rosie O’Donnell.

And do find the bitching about all those "unelected" EU officials strange when an unelected Prime Minister without a majority in Parliament suspends the elected Parliament to push through an agenda that the majority of the British people (let alone Scotland and Northern Ireland) doesn't want.

I don't have a Cockney rhyming slang for that.

#12 EC, first, thanks for posting here. Your perspective is very valuable, as is BP's.

I haven't got a clue whether leaving the EU would be good or bad for Britain, but that was the vote. Your Rosie O'Donnell example is, indeed, horrific, but circumstances and opinions always change after the votes are in. For example, I doubt that Macron would be re-elected today, but that doesn't mean he is not the duly elected president of France.

I understand that you don't want to revisit the referendum as such.

But shouldn't the people be able to vote on a deal/no deal choice?

As I understand it there is a deal agreed upon by the May government and the EU, ready to be signed. It has not found a majority in Parliament.

So why not let the people decide on it? Elections might do the trick but not quite because I see a lot of people who'd like the deal option but not Corbyn as PM.

A clean referendum would be preferable. Let the people vote on the May deal (or any deal Boris can manage with the EU before October 31st.

#16 and Matt, thank you for your appreciation.
The difference between elections and the Brexit referendum is that in 4 years people automatically get a new choice.

Not so when it comes to Brexit. So I think people should be fully informed of the consequences a deal or no deal will have and be able to vote on it. This seems the logical thing to do as Parliament has refused the deal AND the no deal option.

#17 We voted to Leave.

No need for a second referendum when Leaving the common market & the EU was offered and taken by the British people in the largest democratic vote in British history.

Reversing a terrible mistake for Britain.

Why should a people keep voting until a foreign power likes the result?

#18 If MPs "representing" constituencies that instructed parliament to Leave the EUSSR felt they could not do as instructed they should have resigned.

#19 I'm not asking for a referendum on Leave or Not Leave, as you can rightfully say that this has been decided.

But since Parliament can't agree on the CONDITIONS for leaving, shouldn't these conditions be decided by the people?

The Johnson government claims it can get a better deal. Well, let them try but if they don't, let the people decide between the deal that has been agreed upon with the EU or a no deal Brexit.

#20 "If MPs "representing" constituencies that instructed parliament to Leave the EUSSR felt they could not do as instructed they should have resigned."

This would be a so-called imperative mandate that socialist "democracies" used to have.

I understand some of the feelings you and other people have about the EU.

But not all. Despite the bureaucracy it has made inter-European trading easier and it's a union of nations that neither the U.S. nor China can ignore.

I don't want 28 "sovereign" European nations in constant conflict with each other. The U.S. shouldn't want it either. The only winners would be Russia and China.

Post Brexit UK will find out soon what real power it has in this world.

No. Bob’s your uncle has everything to do about a guy named Bob, who was someone’s uncle. Do some research, it’s a funny story.
