#2 I could be wrong but I think most western liberal Jews are Jews in name only. They tend to favor the Palestinians and think of Israel as an inconvenience. They have swilled the cool-aid.

#4 Madonna is not Jewish, Dron66046. She just follows kabbala mysticism, which originated in Jewish thought, along with other syncretic mystical beliefs. See more here. To become Jewish, one must formally convert, a process made deliberately difficult because, inter alia, in the Jewish view God does not require it. Also because at times in both Christendom as it was, and the Ummah, proselytizing to members of the majority religion was a capital crime.

Many liberal Jews in the West consider themselves cultural or ethnic members of the tribe, not religious, even those who belong to a synagogue whose services they attend for a few hours for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Jewish new year and the day of atonement, the holiest days of the religious calendar), and who host a Passover Seder dinner at which they briefly address the story of the exodus from Egypt. But a quietly growing population is actively religious and conservative, so we’ll see where things are in the next generation.

#6 I know she's not. I meant some families are about as jewish in spirit as Maddona. Just an outward shew and social rituals. All one needs is a fear of God, and a love for justice. The rest is 'noise' I believe.

That is good to know, TW. Although, my knowledge of the Hasidim or anything jewish is nil. I do know some jewish families, but they seldom discuss their faith or beliefs.

I recently read a book about the eschaton coming true in our times. Terrific read it was, until the author effed it up by making the islamic eschaton part of the end. Christ comes, meets the jewish messiah, and mohammed and the three of them fly away. It was almost as if he were forced to write the end at gunpoint. Alpha and Omega by Harry Turtledove The end was shit but it was a thrilling ride until then.

Not possible. The Jewish messiah is a descendant of King David down the male line, whose job is to establish the physical Jewish kingdom in Israel with Jerusalem as its capitol preparatory to expanding belief in the single God to all mankind. Jesus Christ, the Christian messiah, descended from King David down the female line (his father being God Himself), returns to bring all the faithful at once to Heaven, as I understand it. So their goals are very different. As for the Muslims, they say nothing about the Jewish messiah, but expect Jesus Christ to return in order to bring his faithful to Islam.

* All major religions have a logical side and a mystical side. Nowadays for the Jews the mystical side is owned by the Hassids, most of whom live in inwardly turned ultra-Orthodox communities. The Lubavicher Chassids (alternate spelling for the German/Hebrew/Arabic/Urdu sound that does not exist in English), who are also referred to as Chabad, are the only group that looks outward to the world. They provide meeting houses and religious support to Jewish communities around the world, financed by the generosity of their members. You may recall some years back, when whichever Pakistani sock puppet ran amok through Mumbai for several days, murdering and torturing, but especially the Chabad rabbi, his wife, children, and whatever worshippers they found there. That’s one where the details were alluded to only very, very generally in open source reports.

The Christians also have Kabbalists, they having absorbed it from the Jews during the High Middle Ages, but I am not aware of communities of mystics — I think in Christendom those of a mystic temperament were more likely to end up in philosophy or alchemy, though I could be wrong.

In fact, Rantburgers as a group have done incredible things for my reputation as a savant of sorts - the other reason I love hanging out here.
