#2 The Fed was set up do avoid the 'crashes' of the 19th Century. Instead they presided over 2 depressions* and several recessions.

*Using the metrics of the first depression and remove all the magical bookkeeping and reporting used by the govt for the period 2008-2016, that was the second depression.
