#3 Liability will keep them from mass adoption for a long time. Scam artists will specialize in causing automated driving cars and trucks to crash into them. One multi-million dollar award can negate replacing a hundred or more semi drivers for a year.

Indeed. Last I looked, around 30,000-40,000 people died in traffic accidents. If robots can kill fewer than that, it's a win.

Two of the most common accident types are lane departures where you veer off the road into a tree or oncoming traffic, and running into a stopped car ahead of you. AI should be able to assist with both of those cases even if full self-driving autonomy is a bridge too far.

#5 It's an open question whether computers can drive cars, especially in a Kobayashi Maru scenario. And there are still some very difficult problems to solve like snow and road work.

That said, BP is right on. We know for a fact that people can't drive.
