It's not genetically modified food. It's the kleptocracy of their rulers. Rhodesia was once the bread basket of Africa. Stealing the land the competent farmers worked to pay off supporters who weren't farmers results in the usual non-productive consequences.

#3 I think it was Besoeker who tipped The Fate of Africa as a good read. It is long, well written, and pretty much a must read. I plan on doing a review when the time finds me again, but yeah, must read.
