#2 Plague goes literally with the territory. New Mexico usually has a half a dozen human cases a year and several more animal cases involving pets. Fortunately, the local medical establish is well versed in quick identification and remedial action. One of the unofficial mottoes of the state - Land of the Flea, Home of the Plague. Just got to take common sense precautions outside the core urban areas, ie long pants, stay away from dead animals.
