#1 Misleading! The Iran-Hamas rapprochement actually began with the Tehran conference of December 1990. Following the death of the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1988, and the end of the Iran-Iraq war, the Iranian theocracy reorganized its foreign policy. Iran reached beyond the Shiite community at large and embraced Hamas, a Sunni force that had taken a leading role in the struggle with Israel. The move was made to gain influence over Islamic affairs in general, and over the Palestinian movement, in particular. Hamas then opened an office in Tehran, and it has never been closed.
