#1 per article in british newspaper, construction to begin in dec 2014 and be completed in 2019

this despite the final route selection not being completed and detailed engineering barely begun and, essentially no environmental studies at all

#2 That the Chinese would get in on this project, is them tacitly saying that they consider the West Coast no longer a preferable shipping target. They're expecting California et al to begin jacking up port fees, loading fees, and shipping hold charges to try and balance their budgets, because the vast bulk of the product moves to another location for use.

#3 The article illustration - is that the good old commie smashing the holdings of the west coast International Longshore and Warehouse Union and their pension fund? Irony can sometimes be so entertaining.

#4 The Chinese are quite clever at this kind of project. They fund it, then pay Chinese companies to do all the work. It makes jobs for Chinese and keeps the money at home, and the local third work piss pot gets a prestige project.

#5 Iblis, that model is essentially the British model from the nineteenth and the US model from the twentieth centuries.

#6 One would hope that there will be more than the normal Chinese quality control.

#7 One would hope that there will be more than the normal Chinese quality control.

Don't count on it. The US backed off that plan because of the threat of poisonous Pacific animals migrating to the Caribbean (like the lionfish already has).

Expect lots of new creepy-crawlies to appear if this project goes through.
