#1 what about the three or four 'comedians' who clearly meant to be insulting and malicious

for that matter, what about MSNBC who put up insulting and malicious segments at least a few times each week

#2 No thanks Ms. Perry. I cannot accept your carefully crafted apology, and neither should anyone else. The segment setup was flawed from the beginning. Had the photograph not included the Romney's adopted African American baby [Kieran Romney], it would never had ran. Baby Kieran was the central theme and MSNBC's cruel humor. Sickening but hardly surprising.

Dr. Darron Smith's response in the Huffpo explains the motivation and gut feeling more succinctly. [look for Dr. Smith's not so cleverly disguised theme]

Excerpt: The reality is that transracially adopted children often struggle with feelings of isolation growing up in predominately white settings, and it's likely that Kieran Romney will be no exception. Who better to introduce this topic than Harris-Perry herself, who was raised as a biracial child in a "large white Mormon family"? As Americans, we no longer have the luxury to remain blind to race difference, unmoved by transformative conversations to improve the current conditions of inequality that exist in a divided society.

Opening a dialogue about race is not racist. But silencing the voices of Blacks by discounting their feelings regarding the very topic that has oppressed them for over 350 years is the very definition of racial oppression. Instead of an apology, Melissa Harris-Perry should be encouraged to engage her audience on a much larger scale regarding racial matters.

Dr. Darron Smith, an African-American Latter-day Saint and co-editor of Black and Mormon, published in 2004 by University of Illinois Press. He is also co-author of White Parents Black Children: Experiencing Transracial Adoption. Dr. Smith is an assistant professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Bottom line: No amount of privilege, goodwill, Affirmative Action, or Godly intent will erase the victim mentality. Victim mentality is essentially the 'third leg' of the entitlement equation (Black + Poor + Victim = Entitlement). Without it, the entire entitlement and disparity based social justice argument collapses.

#3 What is Kieran Romney that MelissaDashHarris Perry isn't? Yep, rich and from a good family.

#4 You could fill in the word "black" with "woman" or "gay" or "Muslim" any of another fifteen self described victim categories, Besoeker, and the equation holds.

The root problem is that as the government has grown, and government compensation disconnected from actual productivity became not only tolerated but desirable, people sought to become "victims" rather than survivors, take away the government funding for victim status and this problem pretty much evaporates.

#5 I definitely agree NMU. However, I believe the enterprise began with blacks, and the 'War on Poverty' etc.

#6 ...though the kernel of it may be ultimately found in the heritage of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (which includes a long 'tradition' of patronage and corruption back to the early 19th Century).

#7 Greatest good for the greatest number went out the window a long time ago for the progressives. The "message," the "narrative" and the "process" trump all now. If promoting any of those three involves artificially induced suffering, that's a feature, not a bug...

#8 ...MSNBC more closely resembles a floundering post-talent SNL than a news organization...

Blacks began drifting Dem w/ FDR (economics), accelerated w/ Truman (segregation) and attained current numbers during JFK / LBJ (..."I’ll have them n****rs voting Democratic for the next two hundred years.”...). Tribalism (...racism?...nah, can't be.../sarc) gave us Zero.

Encouragingly, there appears to be some black participation towards Conservative principles, but seeing any on MSNBC is as rare as the steak I didn't have last night...

#9 ...I identify with that picture and I intended to say positive and celebratory things about it, but whatever the intent was, the reality is that the segment proceeded in a way that was offensive.

Yeah right. Don’t worry sweetie, you’re no worse than your colleagues. But just apologize, admit your attempt at humor flubbed and move on. Me thinks Ms. Harris-Perry was weeping because she was exposed as just another hypocritical grievance hustler.

#10 That's Ms. Harris-Perry-Tampon.

She's crying because she got called on it and royally and publicly reamed - and by the likes of CNN at that. I mean how bad to you have to be to have CNN call you on it?

My guess is that she was given a choice of developing a tear or two on national TV or be shown the door.

She claims she was largely brought up on a 'all-white' family. I wonder how her adoptive parents feel about her performance.

#12 Then there's this:

[A} few minutes after the host’s emotional apology for a racially-charged segment on last week’s show... The panelists are discussing populist sentiment in America as part of a discussion about the election of Bill de Blasio in NYC. The discussion spans a commercial break, and in the second half, Katrina Vanden Heuvel is addressing the idea that Republican populism has been successful in stirring up emotion and movement based on a message of lower taxes and limited government. Vanden Heuvel essentially says that yes, the right has been successful, but because "racist":

“But I do think the right-wing populism of the tea party not only became so on obsessed with an anti-government meme, but let’s be honest. there is a race … racism threaded through the right-wing populism, I mean which is not unusual to American right-wing populism, that has not allowed for coalitions that could be built on behalf of working people in this country against the most powerful interests.”

Host Harris-Perry quickly steers the conversation, suggesting that rather than focus on the contemporary Republican party, they look back at populism historically. She says that in the past it was more obvious and accepted and “in fact was in the Democratic party, right, where it was happening at that time.”

Later in the segment, New York Post editorial writer Robert George suggests that racism played its part in part in both right wing and left wing populism, even calling out the unions, but Vanden Heuvel will have none of it.

“Not today though,” she insists. “Not today.”

#13 Ms. Perry has always been abrasive, annoying, and strident--a Progressive all the way.
