#4 The North Koreans have now taken captive a US citizen with no ethnic connection to Korea whom they had admitted to their country as a tourist.

A line was crossed here. Tourists have never been expected to toe the ideological line of the host dictatorship. This has been an implicit understanding for decades.

Western officials' acceptance of Rushdie rules vis a vis Islam might have given the Norks some ideas.

The logical next step for the Norks is abducting Americans living in South Korea and Japan.
