#1 Armor piercing ammo, heavy MG fire, RPG's, mines and roadside bombs (IED) play hell with armored SUV's. Up-Armored civilian vehicles are designed to offer some protection from smallarms fire, blast fragmentation, and hopefully get occupants out of a kill zone. The vehicle in Mexico, along with a very skilled and alert driver, accomplished that mission.

The Americans left Mexico because they were likely hit targets who were compromised and confirmed by the release of personal information to the media by the Mexican Gov't, and had therefore become, through diplomatic directive....persona non grata.
