#1 The Kyrgyz are a very unusual people. Culturally, they are almost cousins to the American cowboy and rural southern cultures, seeming to have many of the same likes and dislikes.

Horses, ranching, rodeos, monster truck rallies, C&W music, and the same general attitude about life and things.

"The Americans said they were struck by how similar Kyrgyzstan felt to Wyoming's high country. "Hell, this feels like going up the South Fork of the Shoshone out of Cody. The dust is the same. The same snow squalls in the mountains. It smells the same," said Garnick. "It's the West."

"The similarities between Native American and Kyrgyz traditions were also striking, said Garnick, whose Wyoming property is partly on the Shoshone and Arapahoe tribes' Wind River reservation. "It's a parallel culture. It feels super-familiar."

"Between the cowpokes' appearances, there were traditional games that harken back to Kyrgyz nomadic roots, like kyz kuumay, or "girl chase," in which a young man on a horse tries to kiss a galloping maiden, who then tries to beat him with a stick; ulak partysh, the polo-like game played with a headless goat carcass; short and long distance horse racing; and kush saluu, in which domesticated eagles or falcons are set loose to swoop down on captured prey, on this day a rabbit and fox."

Okay, maybe not identical. But the beating of the kissing boy with the stick is pretty close.
