#3 Note that so-called counter-insurgency experts have been saying the Pakistani approach - flatten everything in the insurgency's base of operations - only alienates civilians and drives them into the arms of the insurgency (which goes against every bit of history I've read). In reality, if you put enough pressure on the civilian population, they will give up the people they are sheltering. This is how the Chinese and Soviet Communists defeated the guerrillas - by punishing civilians who tolerated their presence. Thousands of years before Marxism and/or Leninism, collective punishment was how defeated kings were located and killed (typically along with the entire royal bloodline).
