#1 An interesting way of dodging Western family court tendencies to penalize the husbands in divorce/custody cases regardless of the specifics of the case. Lucky for her it was Dubai & not KSA. Of course the way things are going, London or Brussels will have similar laws in a few years.

#2 I have zero sympathy for anybody doing business with oil ticks.

#3 I don't know why anyone goes to Dubai. All I've heard (secondhand from other international travelers) is that it's a pit. The only guy I know who likes it and raves over it is a millionaire Pakistani.

#4 A lot of expat Brits are there as well as other Euros - I enjoyed it for the golf but that's about it. My wife and I are big golfers and when we lived in England it was the upcoming place for golf and shopping. Its not bad and its a lot more liberal than say Saudi and Kuwait.

And that, ladies and gents, is a classic example of "damned with faint praise."

#6 I don't know about Dubai, but a lot of people go to Saudi Arabia to make a great deal of money in a short period of time. Ive heard that those spouses who join them generally enjoy the servants, the tennis/golf/pool, shopping in the gold souk, lots of parties and long vacations in exotic elsewheres. I imagine Dubai has all the advantages of Saudi Arabia without, in general, the problems caused by the Morals Police and Saudi snottiness. Mr. Wife hated working in Saudi Arabia, and several times refused possible assignments there, citing my religion as the basis (for which I was profoundly grateful -- too often I forget to tactfully keep my mouth firmly shut). But for many, it's a good step up for their career, and others enjoy the lifestyle.
