#3 There probably really was an "Atlantis" but it was likely where the Azores or Canary Islands are now or possibly where some Greek islands are.

During the last ice age that ended about 12K years ago, sea levels were about 400 feet lower than they are now. This would have made areas that are now small islands much larger islands or completely contiguous land masses and it was that way for about 100 thousand years until the ice melted. At that point the oceans rose at an extremely fast rate and could have flooded entire civilizations in the space of a person's lifetime.

In the US, for example, the East Coast extended all the way out to the edge of the continental shelf. There would have been a broad and probably extremely fertile coastal plain. There are probably a lot of early North American humans buried miles out to sea from where the shore is now along with what would have been villages and paths.

The area we now call The Grand Banks of Newfoundland would have all been well above water. An area of land the size of Pennsylvania is under water there.

There were probably lots of "Atlantis" places that were flooded when the ice melted over the past 10,000 years that might have been passed down in legend.

#4 Sometimes rock faults occur on straight lines. Geologically this is probably interesting but it's not Atlantis. Plato made Atlantis up. There is no mention of it prior to Plato, he was not an explorer.

#10 In the article it said those straight lines are the tracks the ships used to take the bottom sonar scans. The rest of the image are blank sections where no sonar data exists.

#11 I did a paper back in the Stone Age college about Atlantis.

The evidence at the time pointed to the Greek island of Thera (now a volcanic caldera, IIRC).

Haven't followed it much since, but I doubt this is it....

#12 It would be interesting if some "geo" specialist could come up with a theory that would explain how the surface could drop 3+ miles and the ocean rise 1/2 mile. That must have been a heck of an ice age combined with a REALLY major tectonic shift. To be determined....
