#1 Amendment XIII
(Ratified December 6, 1865)

1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

The Civil War produced about 970,000 casualties (3% of the population), including approximately 620,000 soldier deathsâtwo-thirds by disease.[6] The war accounted for more casualties than all other U.S. wars combined.

Hanging is too benign of a punishment for any slaver!
