#2 Where to begin...taking one at random,

19. The EU gives twice as much aid to developing countries as the US

The European Union and its member states paid out more than €43bn in 2005 in public aid to developing countries. This is the equivalent of 0.34 per cent of GNP of the 25 member states, and is higher than the per capita aid levels of the United States at around 0.2 per cent. More than €7bn is channelled through the EU.

Note the words "per capita". These are weasel words aimed at making a population feel guilty because they are not taxed heavily enough so their money can be given to some third world dictator with Swiss bank accounts.

See http://qesdb.usaid.gov/cgi-bin/broker.exe

The US gives more actual money, in dollars, than any other country on the face of the earth in any way you care to assess it IMO.

What we give in blood and treasure is unassailable except to those who think we ought to turn our entire budget over to the UN and "just lie back and enjoy it".

#3 It's worse than that.

Notice that the giving mentioned in the article is PUBLIC SECTOR.

When you total the amount for both public AND private sectors, the U.S. gives way more.

As you said, weasels.

#5 Another way to look at is that aid may not be helping the undeveloped world but instead creating rich dictators and welfare dependents. Neither side really gets much glory in that way of looking at it.

#6 "Europe's bananas, like her Brussels bureaucrats, remain bent despite sceptics' fears."

They were through the bottom of the barrel and still digging for this article. What a sad joke!

#7 Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "get bent".

Seriously, though, having read this list of why the EU is so great, I'm thinking the excitement threshold over there is set at its lowest bar.

#8 A place to soak up American youth and blood. Franklin lied*, Americans died.

*"I hope the United States will keep out of this war. I believe that it will. And I give you assurance(s) and reassurance that every effort of your Government will be directed toward that end."
