#1 Hey, a surge the Donks can fully support.

#2 They said the raid was in South Waziristan, close to North Waziristan...

... and approximately east of West Waziristan and due west of East Waziristan.

#3 Placing it smack dab in beautiful downtown Waziristan.

#4 The fact that any part of Waziristan exists, bothers me. Are they going back for the other two bases?

#5 It should be pointed out that a winter offensive in Afghanistan almost demonstrates panic, because casualties from cold and hunger alone are going to be heavy. Since NATO is quite capable of continuing operations in winter, I suspect the Taliban is starting to realize that if they don't act now, by spring it will be way too late.

#6 I personally like the idea of "Waziristan on glass".

#7 Waziristan under glass would also be appropriate.

I like to think that as Taliban attacks surge, so do Taliban casualties.

#8 Winter attacks really are desperation attacks by the Taliban : the winter has always been the downtime for tribal warfare. Add in the enhancement the cold gives our thermal imaging equipment, and the ability of our troops to fight in the cold due to ECWS 4, the Taliban are trying to do a Tet on us - win a political victory and get a retreat, now that the Democrats control Congress.

#9 It's kind of hard to do a Tet when the only people who care what's happening in Afghanistan are the locals and the warbloggers. And of course, the warmly dressed troops with thermal imaging equipment and the tools with which to make their displeasure felt.

#10 Carrying the fight to the tribes in the winter ended many (most?) American Indian Wars.

Actually, the Democratic majority and many on the left side of the political spectrum 'care' about Afghanistan.

It gives them political cover and, by advocating force increases there, they can use it as a foil against action in Iraq.
