#1 "Basra's police chief ... said he had not been told of the raid beforehand."

Ever think there might have been a reason for that, bucky? Like maybe you were in on the "criminal enterprise"?

#4 The BBC has more information.
Basra council described the raid as illegal and has suspended co-operation with the military.

Mohammed al Abadi, head of the city's council, also said the move was provocative.

He said the council had withdrawn co-operation with the military, saying they had not been informed of the operation and that it violated earlier agreements.
We'll know if the Iraqi central government really means business if the entire Basra council is now taken into custody for obstructing justice, or some such cause, since the council (I think) was in charge of the serious crimes unit. I doubt anything like this will happen, the rule of law in Iraq takes one step forward and two back.
Some pics of the op:
The building being demolished

An Iraqi holds a copy of a Koran taken hostage and martyred by the serious crimes unit to prevent it from falling into infidel hands during the storming of the police station, expect riots shortly.

#5 Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Basra governor Mohammed Waili had approved the dissolution of the unit, but it was unclear whether they had endorsed Monday's operation.

Perish the thought that these government asshole bigshots might actually have enough backbone to roundly condemn their fellow death squad leaders.
