#3 When you play with fire you're going to get burned. They and the powers that allowed this to happen just haven't figured out what playing with fire means. They have, however, figured out that they were in fact playing with fire. So they have to whine about how incomprehensible and inhuman this all is, as if it's a surprise to your average Joe. That explains why they didn't abandon their duty to keep these situations under control. IMNSHO. Humph.
