#1  It is generally accepted that freedom of expression is circumscribed by its adverse fall-out on the dignity of the individual (libel) or the majesty of the divinity (blasphemy).

I think the essayist's problems start in this sentence in the first paragraph. My understanding is that libel is about damaging an individual by publically lying about him, as slander damages the individual by publishing lies about him. His dignity is not the issue, only the truth. And it certainly is not accepted in the West that blasphemy is beyond the pale, else I'd have long since passed from the sight of men. ;-)
