#7 I'm going to apply this principle at home. We have a recurring ANT problem. A treaty with them is just the ticket to make my pest problems go away! When I think of all the money I've wasted on Raid all these years, when I had to do was sign a treaty with them. I'll contact the queen right away!

The author is NOT proposing we make treaty with Al Qaeda. Read the whole thing, as they say.

#11 Dave D. is right, although I think I would question the arguments in that article.

I think there are very few people who think that the Geneva Conventions apply to Al Qaeda. Most people justify their opposition to Gonzales with his attitude to torture. They are not entirely wrong in that. Gonzales' "torture memo" is questionable because it tries to legally redefine and justify the application as a certain amount of pain as non-torture.

This is a slippery slope. Torture has nothing to to with Geneva, it's simply forbidden by international and U.S. law.

No, I'm not very upset about pink panties and barking German dogs. But Gonzales clearly tried to bend the rules. We all know that some stuff happens and we might be willing to look the other way sometimes when we're dealing with real terrorists.

But a public legal redefinition of torture is not something I expect from an Attorney General.

Take it from someone who knows what torture is.

#12 Gonzales was asked about his legal opinion of what constitutes torture. He wrote a memo outlining it. Time for him to defend it, s'all.

Of course, all the questioning is beside the REAL point, which is to shoot down a BUSH candidate so as to embarass President BUSH.
