#1 Ah hah, I was wondering about this yesterday when I saw this story in the Guardian :

Qodir said Gunawan had left for Pakistan to study Islam in 1999 after receiving a scholarship. He had kept in touch with his family regularly since then, Qodir said. ``When we heard about him getting the scholarship in Pakistan we were very proud because he was the first child to study abroad,'' he said. ``We were very disappointed and shocked when we heard of the arrest.''

Now it becomes clear just why he got this scholarship. Remember those other stories on the arranged weddings between the families of the various al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiah members and how the same family names keep popping up. They are breeding and training the next generation.
