#2 I think that the best bet would be to get the Syrian opposition to offer Russia some port concessions, but only if they take a more neutral stance, and stop propping up pencilneck.

Not threatened, but implied, is that if Russia keeps it up, when and if there is a new Syrian government, it will be far friendlier to the west, and that will be the end of a Med port for Russia.

BTW, a new theme song for Assad, the "Pencilneck Geek" song by the late, great, professional wrestler "Classy" Freddie Blassie.

I seem to recall something about the Yugoslavian civil war, an arms embargo and who had the weapons.
