#1 Mr Newman's trip to NK was ill advised but this sorry episode ultimately is the result of the US acting like a borderline suicidal, finlandized masochist on the international stage since 9/11/2001 (see this, this, etc).

The Norks will demand and likely receive huge political and monetary concessions in exchange for Newman's release.

If that happens you can look forward to the Norks abducting Americans from South Korea and Japan to be released for more ransom.

Provocative weakness has consequences.
