#1 Actually, the Black Death has been located in Central Asia. The locals have long lived with it by incorporating behaviors to avoid it. Its when travelers and outsiders ignore the peril that it starts to 'move'. East-West trade (Silk Road) or conflict would transit the place, outsiders (like Europe) would get to experience it in full force. It's endemic now in New Mexico having migrated from the China-Mexico trade route of the old Spanish empire. Just follow certain warnings and you'll be safe. Fear however apparently does wonders in selling print and filling airtime.

#3 #1 is correct - plague is most often carried by the fleas from Ground Squirrels in the US Southwest

#4 ...now if those ground squirrels just happen to 'migrate' to west coast high population areas with poor sanitation and piles of trash, it could be 'interesting'.

#5 You don’t need the squirrels, just the fleas.

Already happened, I understand. It only becomes interesting when it goes pneumonic, transferring via coughing versus the considerably less efficient fleas.
