#1 Not having the troops, weapons, logistics and command ability to mount an actual major offensive.

Russia is doing probing and bandit type attacks.

This probably ends up getting a lot of their own troops killed for no good purpose.

#2 Considering the Russians have been driving on Bakhmut for two months now...

#3 Two grinding months in Bakhmut.

If Russia takes Bakhmut, does the Burg think that's a sign of Russian winning? Or simply UKR falling back to a more defensible line?

Temps have been below freezing for the last ten days. RUS Winter Offensive I believe is starting now with the amount of shelling that we are seeing. Bakhmut front would seem to be the new focus and I imagine we'll see developments here in the next month or so.

Yes, no, kinda. It will show that the way Russia knows how to fight a big war, aka throw bodies at the problem until it goes away, works when the enemy runs out of bullets before Russia runs out of bodies. If there are pushes from North and South of Bakhmut, then Ukraine pulled back to shorten the lines.

But one of the reasons Ukraine is fighting so hard there is the Donbas has a lot of built up areas that are easy to fortify. Losing them means defending open, flat ground. Much better for Ukraine to keep supplies and units flowing there and grind down the Russians and bleed them, even if it means high Ukrainian casualties, than trying to defend open ground against armored wave attacks.
