 File under: al-Qaeda in Iraq

#1 It is important to remember that right now, the Iraqi army is the second most combat experienced ground military on the planet. And if the government of Iraq diverted its oil revenues to buying advanced weaponry for even a few months, if they got into a fight, Iraq would probably clean Iran's clock.

I think this is one of the reasons we are very hesitant in equipping them with a combat air force.

#2 It takes more than planes and pilots to make a [modern] combat air force. It takes modern infrastructure, logistics, CCCI, training, maintenance, weapons and ordinance technology, security, safety, fuel management, etc. Then you need defensive systems that are married up to your combat and air defense posture. I am not sure we can invest in that at the same time we are trying to bring their ground forces up to par. That will come but with smaller support systems (helicopters, tactical ground support, transport and air defense) and I doubt we will ever give them long-range bomb and missle launch platforms.

#3 It takes a willingness to bomb other shiites, and when push comes to shove I don't think they're going to do that.

#4 The Iraqis should have been able to mop the floor with Iran back in the Iran-Iraq war days. Their equipment was far better, their forces were better trained, their logistics weren't as totally screwed up as Iran's.

#5 "It takes a willingness to bomb other shiites, and when push comes to shove I don't think they're going to do that."

American Lutherans had no problem bombing the living pee out of German Lutherans in 1945. Why do you assume that just because two people are the same religion that they won't shoot each other?

Shiites shoot shiites every day in Southern Iraq.
