#1 This is a representative democracy - somebody has to represent the stupid people. 25% of the country is stupid, 25% evil (and largely stupid as well), 50% don't care, and Rantburg is lost in roundoff error.

#2 Advertisement:
Join CLUB FOR GROWTH. To date we have sent dozens of penny pinching tight wads to Congress, Mike Pence among them. In 2008, we'll send even more. When we reach the tipping point, entitlements will take a hit along with unnecessary departments and programs.
C4G specializes in finding new candidates and getting them through the primaries and elected. Then, they are on their own, but we watch how they vote. If they are in trouble in future elections, we send them some funding.
Because most primaries are nothing but popularity contests, and little is known of how candidates change once in DC like so many sheep, C4G relies on a candidates past performances and leadership displays and reports that to it's members. the members donate as much as they like within limits to whomever they like. It's a free service, although C4G would also appreciate donations so they can run ads wherever necessary. There are also state chapters which are working to reduce state spending and improve the gene pool.

#3 CFG has been pretty effective at sending people ready to do the easy part and cut taxes. I'm afraid I've missed where any of your proteges seriously tried to cut any spending beyond somebody else's earmarks. Until politicians and citizens are ready to gore their own ox to cut spending, it's all make believe.

#4 I guess you could say we have a Republican Blunt Boehner tag team.

#5 So with Nancy Pelosi's assurance of the (ahem) most open, honest Congress ever, is there hope for an end to earmarks?

(Not ENTIRELY rhetorical...)
