#1 I first learnt about idiots who’d defected to the Soviet Union in the 1985 film White Nights. To be honest, we went for the dancing. But the story of the Gregory Hines character, an African American who had bought the 1968-er hype, only to discover that over there he was discriminated against and abused for both his skin colour and his nationality... that was a revelation.

A few years later Mr. Wife had a Bangladeshi colleague who had been sent to military school and then university in Moscow,. He had more interesting stories to tell — though I don’t doubt the ones told in my presence were sanitized. It suffices to say that the discrimination he enjoyed in Germany was not new to him.
