#1 Dominating the Sunni vote, parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and his Taqaddum Party won 43 seats, while the Azm Alliance of rival business tycoon Khamis al-Khanjar took 20. Halbousi’s formula has relied on supporting infrastructure projects in his hometown of Ramadi, securing public sector appointments for Sunnis in Western and Northern Iraq, and adopting a pragmatic secular approach to Iraqi politics. The rise of both Halbousi and Khanjar has decimated former large Sunni players like the Muslim Brotherhood-influenced Iraqi Islamic Party and the brothers Osama and Atheel al-Nujaifi, who for years overshadowed the Sunni scene in Iraq. However, they were also seen as contributors to the sectarian politics that saw Sunni areas ravaged by the rise of the Islamic State.

The Sadrist Movement won the election with 73 seats, followed by the Progress Party which had 41, the State of Law Coalition with 37, the KDP with 32, independent candidates winning 20, the PUK finishing with 17, the Azm Alliance with 15, the Fatah Alliance with 14, the Emtidad Movement and Jil Jadid Movement with 9 each, 6 which were won by the Ishraqat Kanoon, the Alliance of National State Forces (which includes the National Wisdom Movement and the Victory Alliance) mustering 5, the Babylon Movement with 4, the Tasmeem and Kurdistan Islamic Movement having 3 apiece, and the Al-Adel Group, the Islamic Virtue Party, the Hoquq Movement, and the Iktidar Watan Movement all with one seat each.
