Given the biggest value of Taiwan is their chip fabrication and foundries, state that any invasion will be met by a complete destruction of all chip plants and all data. Nobody wants the Chicoms to have those resources. And putting them on the table up front might reduce the likelihood of an invasion

You are thinking in terms of conventional war objectives of material gain. We misunderestimate the strength of China's determination to return their renegade province back to where it belongs as part of the Middle Kingdom, between Heaven and Earth. It is not a passing fancy.

Taiwan is not a big place, slightly smaller than Maryland and Delaware combined, according to CIA World Factbook. Full-scale modern war will make a big mess. An inconvenience, but the big problem for China is the trade disruption war would bring.

Our attempts to lure China into the community of nations via trade failed - Imperial China is still Imperial China - but now China cannot survive without international trade. They import food and raw materials. Their economy would crater without its export markets. The trick will be to get Taiwan back without breaking all that. Hence, the territorial salami-slicing, military jostling, and attempts to buy politicians and institutions.
