#1 Move them to Ft Rucker and let the Army fly them. Us dogs love those 'hawgs. They work great with helicopters, hammer/anvil teams. USAF fighter mafia always hated mud movers anyway. Flight warrants probably do just as well, if not better, as dedicated ground support pilots. US Army operates other fixed wing, so just add these in.

#2 Real reason? F22 and f35 are what they want to go to, even if they aren't as effective in the CAS role for LIC/COIN. Fecking zoomies, they forget who it always comes down to: boots on the ground. Short of nukes, that's what it takes. Give them to the Army and USMC.

#3 This was done once before, moved to the USAF reserve and then when tried to move to the Army ( Army wanted them to augment helos for CAS) the flyboys suddenly brought them back to the front lines. Great aircraft, but not sexy. but then again, if you gotta wear a hankie around your neck to get the girls.....

#7 Had a "ANG retiree briefing" at Gowen Field (Boise, Idaho) a couple of weeks ago. They didn't sound upbeat about keeping the A-10. And if they were to go I don't know whether the Air National Guard will continue at Gowen unless they were to get F-35's (I wouldn't hold my breath on that one though it has been discussed).

#9 Reclassify elements of the Air Force like the Russians as the 'Strategic Force' cut the rest out and hand back as the old Army Air Corps. The Fighter Mafia will have its hands full. Note that some in the Army won't be too happy either as the need and funding to design a helicopter to do what an A-10 does won't be in the budget anymore.

#10 If the Army were smart it would design a UAV around the GAU-8 the same way the A-10 was built around it. But now you wouldn't need all the pilot protection in the A-10.

#13 A CAS low level gun run just in front of friendlies is not where I would want a UAV. That control lag could literally be a "killer". Of friendly troops.

In the 80's there used to be a liberal bumber sticker that said:
"wouldn't it be nice if schools had lots of money and the pentagon had to hold a bake sale to pay for its submarines?"

What we are seeing is this bumper sticker turned into policy.
