#1 I'm no gun expert but I'm 1,000% sure the AR-15 doesn't fire a .50 round. Early lead for the Dumbest Democrat of the Week Award.

#2 The .50 Beowulf is a rifle cartridge developed by Jeffrey Ulatan [1] of Alexander Arms for use in a modified AR-15 rifle.

#6 Average AR weighs about 6.5 pounds. So she hasn't lifted many boxes either. No surprise there. OTOH I'm sure her bag man knows what $10k cash weighs with his eyes closed.

#7 As for specialty caliber ARs, what a waste of time. If you want to shoot hogs, get an AR 10 and be done with it. Better variety of ammo and more reliable. If you are going after dangerous game like big bears, the last thing you want is a compromise round designed to feed in an AR receiver. Get a 375 H&H or 300 Win Mag and put Smokie down humanely.

#8 But the idea of AR - 15 shooting Barrett rounds, MM!!!

Incidentally, anybody has an idea how long would it take a competent gunsmith to turn an AR - 15 into a fully automatic?

#9 All knowledge of the AR-15 style weapon, which I happened to be reviewing yesterday. A couple of interesting factoids:

From 2000 to 2015, the number of manufacturers of AR-15 style variants and knock-offs increased from 29 to about 500.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has estimated that approximately 5 million to 10 million AR-15 style rifles exist in the U.S.

#10 Not a topic to go on record about, G. But lots of things are easier than hitting a good sand wedge. There are 50 cal BMG semi autos but the mag well alone is as big as an AR lower. It's purpose built and that's a good thing. A 50 BMG round is a lot of remedy.

#11 The main question is "would I want to be shot with (name your caliber)?" I'd really rather not be shot with a 17 HMR or above. I might survive but I might get to carry my intestines around in a bag after that. Not a fan of that lifestyle.

#12 the number of manufacturers of AR-15 style variants and knock-offs increased from 29 to about 500.

Of course they did. AR's are like Legos for adults. What's not to like... other than the .223/.556 thing?

#14 Eh, lots of 223/5.56 upstream ain't a bad thing. Hell, bullet technology has made the 380 viable. I've got a tactical AR with a 24" barrel in 6.8 SPC (270 cal, God's own caliber if you buy into Jack O'Connor's gospel.) It does a job. At range.

#15 #9 I've read the same article but I do know that good gunsmiths can do wonders - so, what's the answer to my question?

p.s. Not that I'm an adherent of automatic fire - my instructors in basic had very definite opinions on the subject.

#16 Still think it's better left undiscussed on the record. But I imagine if you had a contest some guy would win with a Wrigley's gum wrapper in under a minute. No it would not be reliable but a great proof of concept.

#17 g(r)omgoru there are some pretty easy ways someone with minimal metalworking skill can do to make an AR automatic.

I wouldn't recommend it as not only it is illegal, but the civilian AR isn't designed to sustain a heavy firing cycle for an extended time. The AR will jam pretty quickly.

#18 You can get bump stock results with your belt loop and thumb. Or a rubber band. I won't link to any of that but it's easy to find.

#21 I'll be honest. I have an M1A. I'd rather have the AR and more ammo. I have a DSA SA-58 pistol. It's a blast but not a substitute for a battle rifle.

#36 This is the basic problem with republic style government and more so with pure democracy. True believers believe what they believe. Win or lose they believe you should believe what they believe too. Believe it or not they don't care what you believe if it isn't what they believe. And you can believe it, brother...

#37 i'd always thought Automatic fire was good for fire suppression but it kills your aim, and empties your clip really fast, which is why the 3 shot selector came into being.

Shouldn't we encourage things that empty your clip while screwing up your aim? Or am I off?

#38 ...no fun fire discipline. Everybody auto, then sudden silence. As everyone is trying to slam another mag in the gun, the other boys send ordnance your direction.
