#1 ....This made me remember a story I read early last week, which made the suggestion that the Talibs might well have simply called the district admins/commanders directly (they would have known perfectly well how to contact them; and vice versa) and said, more or less:

"Hey, how's it hangin'? We took over last night - didn't you guys get the word? Oh, yeah, I know, those guys in Kabul couldn't get it together to save their goats, y'know? No, no, we won - they're just draggin' it out to look good. Oh yeah, no probs - so look, we'll be to your office about, say, nineish? Good to go, see you then."

If that's even close to true, then it would help explain the even-faster-than-we-thought collapse. Afghans actually don't fight unless they have to - bribery, threats, family ties, and religious connections work a whole lot better and leave the new guys more people to rule/tax.
