#1 By taking hostages Hamas gained enormous and dangerous leverage, which incentivizes the taking of hostages.

The Houthis e.g. sure will be tempted to seize big cruise ships and force them to sail for Houthi controlled ports, recreating the plane hijackings of the 70s and 80s at a higher order of magnitude.

#2 I watched Netanyahu on Fox this morning. He again said Israel had agreed to a ceasefire multiple times but Hamas refused every time. He could really blasted Biden for saying Netanyahu isn't doing enough to free the hostages. I enjoyed it.
