#2 Paki's for bugs & gas research. Saudi Arabia markets for nuke sales and service ?

I'm believing none of this until the Magic Kingdom 'wet market' story breaks.

#3 Look up Aramco ARC. Mohammed Saggaf originally started this Dept up. Then eventually Ali Mishari took it over. It was the seed which nurtured the crazy idea that there was sufficient number of smart "locals" who could managing the creation of technology in Kingdom. No expats really were necessary other than a few locums. It was and still is a sham concept bound for long run failure. I suspect Saggaf is knowledgable on what's happening in the case of U-235. He's an MIT grad and rose rapidly into Senior Mngmt. Too fast actually. He had zero field experience with oil. Can you believe it. A desk jockey. Google him.

#4 This does not end well for anyone. Once the Magic Kingdom imports the cadre of smart people to make nukes, the proliferation aided by the black market sales of everything will find their way into some jihadi.

#5 This gentleman, Ospas Dhahran 49? He appears to be a car wax and a dessert topping.

Dr. Muhammad M. Al-Saggaf
President of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals

But Saudi Arabia has never been with us. For a while we were with them, because they controlled the oil flow. But they don’t anymore, and at some point they’ll go back to picturesquely breeding racing camels and quoting poetry.

#6 @Trailing Not quite how reality works. Do you really think that the US was not aware of how politics/oil field reserves/SAG oversight/Saudi family consanguinity etc progressed between 1933 and 2020 ? Ask yourself.... What was and still is the single largest group of US citizens located outside the USA between 1933 and today. Bingo....Dhahran ! US citizen livde in Dhahran for decades and continue to do so, but a lot less today than back in the 80's when it peaked. None the less, while there maybe more US citizens in London or Zurich over those decades, they were disassociated from each other. In Dhahran it was and still is always "1959". Everybody knows each other. Every US Aramcon is has a college degree even the K-12 teachers. They have large families and live there for years. Even 3rd generations (Google Aramco Brat). Now ask yourself do you still think the US is caught off guard over the years on developments (political/reserves/tech development/economics/millitary expenditures/social progress/Qatif/Najran whatever) in the KSA? The best place to hide a car is in a parking lot..... In the past 90 years The Eastern Province was very stable except for Iran and Khobar Towers via Qatif and the Abqaiq drones. Still those were managed well enough.....

#7 Some of my fellow corporate expat wives spent time in Saudi Arabia and told stories, Ospas Dhahran 49, as did Mr. Wife about his adventures during product start-ups he did in our factory in Jeddah. But our people went over there for limited assignments, and Mr. Wife was exceedingly grateful have me as an excuse not to transfer there each time it was offered, and the one in Yemen after unification, too. Me being Jewish and half-Israeli was an acceptable reason for him to say no. We went to Europe when he joined the team opening Eastern Europe after the Wall fell, instead. Frankfurt and Brussels are my cities, and you’re right that the English-speaking expat communities there are not tight.

That said, I had no idea there was such a large group of Americans over there in the oil biz. .Com was there for two decades or so, I believe, but until reading your above I assumed he was unusual. And goodness knows the expat wives I’ve encountered around the world, while as a group educated and cultured, tend to manifest interest more in shopping and socializing, and restaurants and vacations, than in the politics of their host nation, while their menfolk as a group assumed that all the wives were similarly focussed. So definitely 1959, even 30+ years later. I garnered a few startled looks during those pre-Rantburg years because my interests lie elsewhere. I do have two delightful expat brats of my own, so recognized that incomplete Americanism in then-Senator Obama when he hit the campaign trail, the first thing that made me uncomfortable about his candidacy.

Were you hanging out here during the Khobar massacre in 2004? Many of my ideas were about the general situation over there were formulated from this report/discussion and the days that followed.

#8 Just discussed the 2004 massacre with Mr. Wife, who says he used to stay at the InterContinental near the Khobar towers when working at the factory in Dhahran; some of our people — mostly Lebanese regional transfers, not American expats — were also living in the Khobar apartment buildings, so the attack felt very personal him.
