It reminds me of my Asia, South Asia History Courses at university. Its all playing out again, but with different names and different goal, but Wuhan** is still the major player, even today.

**Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province in the People's Republic of China. It is the largest city in Hubei and the most populous city in Central China, with a population of over eleven million, the ninth-most populous Chinese city and one of the nine National Central Cities of China.

To compare, name the 9 top cities in Russia or EU- Europe, or North America... then you will know what Wuhan really is...a major player in modern Chinese history.
