#11 Re #8: Deacon, according to Wikipedia, d he did own a slave, but emancipated him rather than sell him. Grant's wife and his in-laws owned slaves.

#12 Rambler, other sources think Grant didn't actually own him but rather he was bonded to Grant as a man servant. It is unclear if Grant released him from his service or freed him. However, Grant did use the services of his Father-in-law's slaves, paying him for their use. Grant never, as far as I can find out, expressed his views on slavery. He seemed to be apathetic about it.
