#2 More than you probably wanted to know about the M-777

BLUF: Every design is a compromise. This time, it is weight vs continuous fire.

The M-777 was designed to be a lightweight howitzer that could be transported by helo in the mountains of Afghanistan. The use case is sniping at clusters of jihadis, so fire rate is not important.

In Ukraine, the game is protracted (if not continuous) rounds of artillery ping-pong. The important parameters are continuous fire rate and range. Having to take tubes offline for repair is not good.

One big difference between the US vs Russian styles of war is maintenance. We assume the tools, manuals, and spare parts will be readily available. Classic Russian equipment is designed to be fixed in the field by semi-literate peasant conscripts with no Pep Boys around for 500 kilometers.

#4 Another Russian design principle is that equipment/personnel have a life expectancy. Why bother with repair/rebuild/refurbish if you are going to just expend it anyway? Certainly cuts down on log tails. If you have no problem with 'burning through your manpower and equipment' in the first couple of waves, the degree of finesse in that equipment or troop skills is much lower.
