Install it to BYPASS the Power companies remotely programmable unit to actually RUN the HVAC. But leave the power companies in place, but not in actual control of the HVAC.

While you are at it give this some deeper greater thought. SMART METERS

It means your Power companies communicate and control power flow and direction over the power lines themselves.

Note: Some of you might remember in the late 1990's early 2000's the power companies were even selling communication services and devices that used their power grid instead of Broadcast towers.

Which means your home or Business electrical power supply could also be a Communication Circuit. What does that open you up too?

#2 I have zero pity for them. From the source article:

in exchange for entering the contest, customers had to opt-into in to a program that allows power companies to remotely adjust web-connected 'smart' thermostats when energy demands are high, KHOU reported.

If above is true, the affected Texans GAVE their permission to have Smart thermostats do their thing.
Similar defects in judgment were noted last winter when so many Texans thought they were immune to the phenomenon of water freezing and pipes bursting in buildings that were unheated in freezing weather. Gods of the Copybook Headings covered this rather well, IMNSHO.
