#1 I remember a description of the search or fusion power many years ago.

1 Take a huge disel engine (The really big ones, like used to power a ship)

2 Run it up to speed with electric motors.

3 Drop one drop of fuel in the intake. Let it run 30 minutes.

4 Analyze the exhaust for burnt fuel.
( Use very sensiive detectors to find the minute atoms left)

Pretty well intended to get NO results.

#2 NIF addresses a really serious national security issue.

We have not had any tests of nuclear weapons, designs or related equipment in nearly 20 years - including tests that could help us understand the current conditon and usability of devices designed long ago. It's not a trivial matter - it's one that keep people in the field awake at night.

NIF is an important asset and one that did not get built without opposition or controversy. You should be damned glad we have it. Because Obama is determined - and has said publicly he is determined - to push Congress to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which would ensure we never will have another live test.
