Moscow's denunciation is slightly worrying. If they're against it, how bad could it be? They seem to get along fine with King Nutzo the First over in Novowelistan.

#4 It would be good if the administration could find a way to oust Karimov and replace him with somebody less objectionable. By doing this the administration has a chance to get rid of an embarassing ally while simultaneously keeping Uzbekistan in the good guys' column. It would also help avoid the Cold War mistake of excusing some really disgusting regimes just because they were anti-communist.

#6 Sorry, but I just can't generate any sympathy for Islamic fundamentalists who want to set up an Islamic Caliphate across Central Asia. I can't imagine a Caliphate being an improvement on the current state of affairs.
