#2 A friend's father was a Hero of the Soviet Union but he died for that award. Then the friend and his mother were taken for lifetime support by a high party family and he was later made to marry their daughter when she was a "communism" professor at a major Moscow University. He defected when he needed a safe exit from the marriage without a stop at a gulag.
The physical aspects of his work for the USSR are quite well known... like say... his woodpecker..
I used to enjoy his stories about his father and life after.
