#2 I forgot all about this one. Here's a pretty good summary of the case so far, set to be argued in late March.

Seems like Oracle's the underdog in this fight but since Google's involved, let them take this one in the shorts.

#3 Gee, no big company wants to pay royalties for things that they steal. They have a right to copy patented things because they represent the public interest, they say. Paying a small royalty just because the stuff is patented. would be so unfair to them.
So they copied java. But only a few lines were obviously patented, so they should pay nothing, they say.

#5 Eh... copied Java? Oracle *bought* Sun Microsystems who 'owned' Java - or Java Standard - or the rights to the name.
Besides I believe Java is 'mostly' open source. 'mostly'.

#6 Netscape was built on software developed on the public dime, but Clark and Andreesen were allowed to profit off it because lots of that cash found its way into Clinton Inc. The "open sores" software movement is what Harlan Ellison called "a shuck."
