#2 The book of Genesis 18-20 I believe it is, refers to the evils of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. There are reportedly some 20 additional references throughout the book. The precise details can be debated, but most scholars believe something calamitous at least happened there.

Orwell's 1984 is becoming less and less debated.
