According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cocaigne thought he was cooking & eating the heart; the 3rd prisoner claims he slept through the attack.

#12 If Mr Cocaigne had a saucepan, cooking fat and other ingredients, and the tools with which to prepare them (one imagines he didn't peel and slice that onion with his teeth and fingernails), presumably he had a hot plate as well. Admittedly I know very little on the subject, but since when do prisons allow convicts to prepare gourmet meals in their cells?
