‘Lorax' tree said to be Dr. Seuss' muse topples in San Diego
The seaside cypress believed to have inspired the fanciful Truffula trees of Dr. Seuss’ classic 1971 children’s tale "The Lorax" has toppled in Southern California.

The Monterey cypress stood 80 to 100 years in Ellen Browning Scripps Park in San Diego’s La Jolla community before it fell Thursday, city officials said Monday.

"It’s an iconic tree, a beloved tree," said Timothy W. Graham, a San Diego city spokesman.

La Jolla was home to Dr. Seuss, author and illustrator Theodor Seuss Geisel, for more than 40 years, from 1948 until his death in 1991 at 87. In Geisel’s hands, the cypress with its long, sinewy trunk and densely clumped canopy became the cotton candy-hued Truffula. The trees’ existence, threatened by logging, finds a protector in The Lorax, whose "I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees" became an environmentalist and pop-culture battle cry.

As detailed in the website LaJolla.com, an environmentally conscious Geisel rankled at development he said threatened his community. That frustration found life in the tale’s villain, the Once-ler, who in the site’s words, "builds a huge, thriving business at the expense of the Truffula trees and the creatures who depend on them."

News of the toppled icon spread over the weekend even as San Diego officials said arborists were trying to understand what happened.

"We’re trying to figure out why the tree fell over," Graham said Monday.

The tree was alive and appeared to be in good health, save for termites, he said. San Diego’s weather was seasonably mild last week. Graham on Monday said that much of the tree has since been removed and that the city is "looking to salvage it somehow."

Supreme Court ruling deals potential blow to Paul Manafort as he battles state charges
[FoxNews] A Supreme Court ruling in the case of an Alabama man who pleaded guilty to a gun charge could have major implications for the unrelated white-collar case against former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort in New York -- by keeping him exposed to another set of charges, even if he ultimately wins a presidential pardon.

At issue in the Alabama dispute was whether the "dual sovereignty doctrine" -- which allows a person to face both state and federal charges for the same offense -- violates the Fifth Amendment's Double Jeopardy Clause. On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled it does not.

"Although the dual-sovereignty rule is often dubbed an 'exception' to the double jeopardy right, it is not an exception at all," Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the opinion. "On the contrary, it follows from the text that defines that right in the first place."

This clears a path for prosecutors in New York to continue their case against Manafort, who already has been convicted of federal crimes that include bank and tax fraud. Had the court ruled the other way in Monday's case, Gamble v. United States, and eliminated the dual sovereignty doctrine, a pardon from President Trump would have left Manafort free and clear.
But with the doctrine still in place, the New York case complicates matters since presidential pardons only affect federal cases, not state ones.

"No one is beyond the law in New York," Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said in a statement when the indictment was announced. Manafort is facing 16 counts in that indictment, including conspiracy, residential mortgage fraud, and falsifying business records. The charges are based on allegations similar to ones related to his federal convictions.

Earlier this month, a judge agreed to have Manafort transferred from his federal prison in Pennsylvania to New York's notorious Rikers Island as he awaits trial.

The Gamble case, meanwhile, involved a man who was first convicted of a state gun possession charge following a guilty plea, then indicted in federal court for the same possession. He pleaded guilty in that case too, only to appeal with the argument that the federal charge violated double jeopardy.
Alito explained that the Double Jeopardy Clause prohibits multiple prosecutions for the same "offence," but "an 'offence' is defined by a law, and each law is defined by a sovereign." Therefore, Alito said, "where there are two sovereigns, there are two laws, and two 'offences.'"

Alito's opinion was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Brett Kavanaugh, as well as Chief Justice John Roberts.

Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Neil Gorsuch each wrote dissenting opinions, marking the latest case that saw Gorsuch and Kavanaugh -- both Trump nominees -- on opposing sides. Ginsburg viewed the Double Jeopardy Clause as barring "successive prosecutions by parts of the whole USA," noting that the United States and the individual states "compose one people, bound by an overriding Federal Constitution."

Gorsuch pointed to historical interpretations, including those from when the Fifth Amendment was adopted in 1791, which "suggested that a prosecution in any court, so long as the court had jurisdiction over the offense, was enough to bar future re-prosecution in another court."

The conservative justice railed against the idea that a person in the United States should be allowed to be charged for the same thing in two separate cases.

"A free society does not allow its government to try the same individual for the same crime until it’s happy with the result," he said.
Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Neil Gorsuch each wrote dissenting opinions. From a common-sense, layman's view, it would seem to me that Gorsuch and Bader are correct. Suppose a person has business interests in many States. Many States have laws that parallel Federal law. Suppose, the criminal infraction carries a 1-2 year sentence in the Federal system and a similar penalty in the various States. It doesn't stand to reason that some relatively minor criminal infraction, could be compounded serially across many States and a person could end up spending the rest of his life in prison.

China-Japan-Koreas
Did Britain Fail Hong Kong?
[History Today - 2014 Memory Hole] At midnight on June 30th, 1997 Hong Kong reverted from British control back to China. Looking back, did Britain fail the people of Hong Kong?

To answer this question it is important to understand the relative balance of power between China and the United Kingdom. During the 19th century Britain was in its heyday. The Royal Navy could project her power to any seaport in the world. Britain was able to coerce China into signing the treaties that acquired Hong Kong and leased the New Territories for 99 years. By the late 1970s, those days were long gone. Delicate negotiation, rather than gunboat diplomacy, was Britain’s best hope of keeping control of Hong Kong.

Much has been made of Prime Minister Thatcher’s visit to Hong Kong in September 1982. Images of her tripping on the steps at the Great Hall of the People and reports of Deng Xiaoping’s irritation at her proposal of keeping a British presence in Hong Kong, have been well documented and criticised. However before Margaret Thatcher even arrived in Beijing, the British had encountered Deng’s ire over Hong Kong. Deng had made clear his intention to re-acquire Hong Kong and the New Territories to Hong Kong Governor Sir Murray Maclehose in 1979.

Deng hated the treaties that gave control of Hong Kong over to Britain and saw them as invalid. Deng made it clear that the People’s Liberation Army could walk into Hong Kong any time it liked and there was little the British could do about it. Deng felt so sure that he held all the cards; he told the Prime Minister in 1982 that if an agreement was not reached within the next two years, China would take unilateral action.

Margaret Thatcher left Beijing chastened and the whole world knew it. Within ten days of Thatcher’s trip to Beijing, the Hong Kong stock market had lost 25 per cent of its value.

#1  At it's height, British rule brought unparalleled levels of civility and efforts to gain prosperity to all its colonial territories. Now, Britain is intent on importing the worst of what they once fought to control in faraway lands, all in the name of white shame. May the good people of the UK push out the hair shirt crowd. Burn them alive if you must.

#4  Yeah let's not pretend the British were the good guys. They deliberately prolonged the potato famine, among other great crimes. They invented the concentration camp and used it against the Boers when they couldn't win with their army. The entire reason for the Boer War was to seize control of the diamond mines, which they thought of as unsuitable in the hands of a nation of farmers.

China is at fault here, not Britain. Shit on the media for blaming the wrong target.

Egypt's ousted president Morsi dies after collapsing in Dominican Republic court
[France24] Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically-elected president who was ousted by the military in 2013, died Monday after collapsing in court.

Egypt's public broadcaster said the 67-year-old former president was attending a session in his trial on espionage charges when he blacked out and then died.

"He was speaking before the judge for 20 minutes then became very animated and fainted. He was quickly rushed to the hospital where he later died," a judicial source told AFP.

Broadway Play About Clintons to Close One Month Early
The Broadway production of a play about Bill and Hillary Clinton talking frankly about her 2008 presidential campaign will close a month ahead of schedule, due to low ticket sales.

Starring Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow, Hillary and Clinton was set to close on July 21 but will instead close June 23. It cost $4.2 million to produce.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Hillary and Clinton is not based on the real Clintons, but instead characters with the same name in an alternate universe," and its early closing is linked to "underwhelming ticket sales." Set in a New Hampshire hotel room during that state's 2008 Democratic primary, it touches on marriage and sexism in politics.

A New York Times review mournfully noted that Lucas Hnath's 90-minute play was "asking us to see the world through the eyes of a woman who ostensibly has all the right stuff to be president and yet is never allowed to win."

They have partnered with a Chinese firm specializing in organ transplants to help supplement their new police of "Kill it, Harvest it, and loot it." They now say any shoplifters will be shot, harvested for their organs and then their pockets rifled through in search of any extra cash.

When asked if the new policy was 'insensitive' to minorities or college student, Gibson's representative proudly stated that it sensitive to everyone's needs. People in need get the desperately required organs, their "Shoplift Servicing Agents" get whatever spare change and a 5% cut of any organ sales and the store gets a nifty new pyramid of skulls to display in the front window. When pressed about the shoplifters, the Gibson's Rep merely laughed and says, "They should be proud to be used in such an environmentally friendly action. We're recycling in a new frontier. Besides, it's not as if they were humans. They're just non-viable tissue masses."

The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, said on Monday: "One of the most complicated CIA cyber espionage networks that had an important role in the CIA’s operations in different countries was exposed by the Iranian intelligence agencies a while ago and was dismantled."

"We shared the information about the exposed network with our allies that led to the identification and arrest of CIA intelligence agents," Shamkhani was quoted as saying by the state broadcaster IRIB.

Scepticism as Sudan moves to put Omar al-Bashir on trial
[Al Jazeera] Sudan's former President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
has appeared in public for the first time since his overthrow by the military following months of mass protests against his 30-year-long autocratic rule.

Dressed in a white robe and turban, the toppled leader was seen on Sunday as he was escorted under heavy guard from a maximum security prison in Sudan's capital Khartoum to the prosecutor's office.

There, prosecutors informed him he faced charges of "possessing foreign currency and acquiring suspicious and illicit wealth", according to the official SUNA news agency.

He was given one week to raise objections, questioned on additional unspecified corruption charges, and taken back to Kobar prison.

If al-Bashir does not appeal, he could appear in court as early as next week, Sudan's acting Chief Prosecutor Alwaleed Sayed Ahmed said on Saturday.

In Khartoum, the moves against the 75-year-old former president triggered derision and scepticism from critics who dismissed it as an attempt by Sudan's new military rulers to deflect attention from a recent bloody crackdown on protesters, as well as its reluctance to cede power to a civilian-led transitional administration.

They also questioned the likelihood of al-Bashir receiving a fair trial in Sudan or being held accountable for the most egregious of charges against him.

The former leader, who came to power in a coup in 1989, is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide relating to abuses by Sudanese forces in the country's Darfur region between 2003 and 2008.

group says the Egyptian government bears responsibility for the death of former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, amid pressing international demands for a fair and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his final hours.

According to authorities, the first democratically elected president in Egypt's modern history died on Monday after collapsing in a court in Cairo while on trial on espionage charges. The Egyptian public prosecutor said a medical report showed no apparent recent injuries on Morsi's body.

Egypt's Ex-Muslim Brotherhood leader Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh said that Tuesday that Islamist groups do not practice real democracy. They do not grasp the concept of Islamic "shura" (consulting) complained Abul-Fotouh during an interview with Al-Arabeya Channel.
The former Brotherhood leader further criticised President Mohamed Morsi, saying he lacked transparency and accusing him of allowing local and foreign forces to interference in Egypt's state affairs, refering to the Muslim Brotherhood organisation. Morsi should not be following such forces when he is an elected president, he added.

Trump orders 1,000 MORE troops to the Middle East as Pentagon reveals color 'proof' that Iran's Revolutionary Guards attacked oil tankers in the Gulf
As usual, the Daily Mail has an entire collection of interesting photos that are no doubt very informative to the educated eye.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Pentagon release new images it says were taken from an MH-60R Navy surveillance helicopter of the aftermath of alleged Iranian attack on tankers in the Gulf of Oman

  • Acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan announces 1,000 more troops will go to the Middle East for 'defensive purposes' and says deployment is to 'protect our national interests'

  • Sources say 1,000 more troops are being sent to the Middle East although timing of deployment is unclear

  • Separately Iran said it was about to surpass the limit on uranium stockpiles it had accepted under the nuclear deal which Donald Trump quit
Queerly enough, it is my understanding that the IAEA has not yet looked into the additional sites Israel gleaned from that archive warehouse Israel emptied just ahead of its Iranian guards. So the IAEA actually has no idea whatsoever whether Iran actually currently is below or above that limit, regardless what Iran might claim.
  • The White House's National Security Council said: 'President Trump has made it clear he will never allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons.'

  • Color pictures were revealed after allies said they wanted more proof than grainy black and white surveillance pictures Pentagon put out last week

  • U.S. military says pictures show an Iranian Revolutionary Guards armed fast patrol vessel alongside the M/T Kokuku Courageous removing an unexploded limpet mine after another one went off on the other side

  • 'Iran is responsible for the attack based on video evidence and the resources and proficiency needed to quickly remove the unexploded limpet mine,' Central Command said in a statement

  • Among the pictures is one showing what is said to be the remnants of the removed limpet mine and another one which shows what the military say is a handprint left by one of the Revolutionary Guards

Jihadi group’s shelling on Aleppo kills 12 civilians
(IraqiNews) 12 non-combatants were killed in a rocket shelling conducted by a jihadi group on a village in the Syrian province of Aleppo, SANA reported on Monday.

The Syrian Arab News Agency reported that gunnies from a Jihadi group carried out a rocket attack on the residential area in Wadehi Village, in the southern countryside of Aleppo.

The shelling resulted in the killing of 12 civilians, in addition to injuring 15 others with serious injuries, SANA added. The corpse count included five children.

Furthermore, it explained that Jihadist group targeted the village, without mentioning that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(formally Nusra Front) is one of these groups.

SANA also published photos of the injured people in one of the hospitals, including a child, with bandages on his face and stomach, and another one with shrapnel on his right leg.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is controlling large parts of Idlib and parts of the provinces of Hama, Aleppo and neighboring Latakia. Other less powerful Islamist factions are also deployed in the region. This region is also witnessing a military escalation since April 2019.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
The Nutcracker...
[New York Magazine] "Wednesday night, get your head right," they shout. "Why settle for a beer when the nutcracker’s here?"

The candy-colored drinks are such a staple of summer in the city that "nutcracker" has become an umbrella term for any sweet, boozy drink that’s sold illegally on the street, out of barber shops or bodegas, and, increasingly, online. Instagram teems with dozens of sellers, with handles like thenutcracker_jacker, nutcrackers_nemos, and kerbyscups, each offering free delivery and video testimonials: "This shit is fire!" says a devotee of brooklyn_nutcrackers. He takes a swig as the cameraman makes the rat-a-tat noise of a machine gun.

While police and community organizers once went to war with nutcrackers, the drinks remain largely unregulated. Now, John Cori, president of the Rockaway Civic Association, watches helplessly as sellers work in teams and reload from cars parked on side streets. "They’re definitely a menace," Cori says, bemoaning lost alcohol sales suffered by concessionaires on the boardwalk. Cops admit they tend to turn a blind eye to nutcrackers, as a spokesperson wrote in a terse email: "This is not something that is tracked by the NYPD."

Taliban’s political chief visits China ahead of the 7th round of talks with U.S.
[KhaamaPress] The political chief of Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has visited China ahead of the 7th round of talks with the United States.

A former Taliban front man Abdul Hai Mutmayen has told Arab News that Mullah Baradar is leading a delegation of Taliban leaders during the visit to Beijing.

Mutmayen further added "It seems that Taliban leaders are making efforts to hold consultations and exchange their views with key stakeholders ahead of the next round. The visit is an indication that the seventh round is important."

This comes as China has offered to host intra-Afghan talks in a bid to help end the ongoing conflict in the country.

Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck reached for the green sauce...
the Taliban leaders have said the group could accept China as a guarantor if they reach a peace deal with the United States.
This article starring:
Abdul Ghani Baradar
Posted by: trailing wife || 06/18/2019 00:00 || Comments || Link || E-Mail|| [1 views] Top|| File under: Taliban

#1  Abdul Ghani Baradar was arrested twice and released by Pakistain (the last release was in 2013) for terrorism.

Baradar helped Mullah Omar as his second, in founding the Taliban movement in Afghanistan in 1994. He served in several key positions when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. He fled to Pakistan after the US invasion in 2001 and was arrested in 2010 in an operation that was used to show Pak's cooperation against terror to get more dough out of the IMF.

He totally re-invented himself through effective PR through the CIA under Obama who once called Baradar's appointment "a startling change ... that bodes very well for peace". Today he is a 'revered' figure in Taliban circles, and Pak military officers stand up when his name's mentioned. When the US finally leaves Af, they will be leaving it all to him. When China acquires land in Af to consolidate their control on their precious BRI, this is the man they must negotiate with. Also, they've begun combing for Lithium mines already according to some sources.

In May 2017, Afghan officials attended the massive Belt and Road Forum in China, and in October Afghanistan joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which funds BRI projects. This was just a formality however, insurance in case the taliban didn't win Af.

Interestingly, China's negotiations with the Taliban had begun way earlier. In the 1990s China maintained good relations with the then Taliban government in order to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a haven for ETIM(East Turkistan Islamic Movement) militants. It was thought that they feared the chaos from Af would spill over into their Xinjiang hovels and Pakistain, endangering China's prospects of controlling S.E. Asia.

Back in 2001, we discovered Huawei Inc. (Yupp!) supplying surveillance and communications equipment to the Taliban from Bangalore, India. Indian MI suggested the requisite Home departments to arrest 178 chinese Huawei engineers working in coordination with, aiding and servicing the Afghan terror group. With inputs from the US intelligence, a case was made and foolishly (Indian Standard Protocol) the intel was sent back to China seeking a reply. Of course they were 'outraged'. The Shenzen corporation was under heavy surveillance by America so supplied them from out of India. Bangalore, which boasts more than 40 Salafi mosques is also considered the IT hub of India, also is fast becoming the entry point of legal islamism in India.

Anyway, the words of a chinese foreign minister from last year best describe the intent on China in it's own two-faced way.

"Who will protect the Afghan government and provide financial support to it after the US troops’ pullout? The most important thing is the Afghan people’s interests, but the Americans ignore them and want to protect their own."

Let's see what happens. The Taliban leaders have said the group could accept China as a guarantor if they reach a peace deal with the United States.

Al-Shabaab Speaks About Its Latest Attacks In Somalia And Kenya
[RADIOSHABELLE] Somali turbans killed eight Kenyan police with a roadside kaboom near the border between the two countries on Saturday, officials said, while another eight died in a bombing the same group carried out in the Somali capital.

Both attacks were claimed by Somali Islamist hard boys, who also kidnapped three Kenyan police reservists on Friday from the same area, in Wajir district in northeast Kenya.

Kenyan military forces have occupied part of southern Somalia along the border since 2011. The Kenyans, along with allied Somali militia, wrested control of the territory from al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
jihadists after a spate of kidnappings on Kenyan soil.

Al-Shabaab is fighting the weak, U.N.-backed Somali government and its international allies in a quest to impose strict Islamic law.

The vehicle that was hit by the roadside kaboom was carrying 11 coppers, police front man Charles Owino told Rooters. A local official said eight were killed.

"Eight bodies were found and taken to Wajir. Two were rescued, but they are at death's door," said Muhumed Ali Gedi, a member of the local community security team from Wajir who witnessed the rescue mission.

In Mogadishu, al-Shabaab detonated two bombs. Police said the first blast, at a busy junction known as K4, was a boom-mobile intercepted by security services that caused no casualties.

The other blast killed eight people and injured 16, said Abdikadir Abdirahman, the director of Aamin ambulance service.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabaab’s front man for military operations, said the group was responsible for the blast in Kenya and the two in Mogadishu.

German Green Party Proposes Ban on All Industrial Farming
[BREITBART] The Green party in Germany said it will ban industrial farming to reduce global warming if it comes to power.

The measure was proposed by Katrin Goering-Eckardt, the party’s leader in the Germany parliament, as part of a massive €100 billion project to finance climate initiatives.

For several years, climate change doomsayers have turned their attention to cattle, as a series of reports demonstrated that "livestock emissions" are more dangerous for the environment than automobiles.

A 2016 article at EcoWatch declared that greenhouse gas emissions from livestock account for a higher percentage of total global emissions than the world’s 1.2 billion automobiles.

Whereas the entire transportation sector accounts for only some 14 percent of global emissions, cows produce a remarkable 14.5 to 18 percent of the global total, the article noted.

Iraq
Japan offers loan for Iraq to upgrade oil refinery
China will continue to need more oil, so anything that increases supply will protect the buyers they compete with for supply, especially so long as Iran is in bad odor.
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) ‐ The Iraqi Ministry of Finance and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed an agreement on Sunday, under which the Japanese agency will offer Iraq a loan of 110 billion Japanese Yen (nearly USD one billion) to upgrade the Basra oil refinery.

The deal was inked by Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Finance Fuad Mohammad Hussein and Ambassador of Japan to Iraq Naofumi Hashimoto, according to KUNA.

The loan, considered to be one of the largest amount provided by the government of Japan for one project in the Middle East and North Africa, is refundable over 40 years with a ten-year grace period and 0.02 percent interest rate, according to a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Finance.

The project aims to increase Iraq’s oil refining capacity by constructing a new plant (fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) complex) at al-Basra refinery, south Iraq, and introducing light gas oil hydrodesulfurization (HDS) technology.

Egypt in $500 million settlement with Israel Electric Corp
[AlAhram] Egypt has signed a $500 million settlement with state-owned Israel Electric Corp over a defunct natural gas deal, the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and Egyptian Natural Gas (EGAS) said in a statement on Sunday.

The statement said under the agreement signed on Sunday, Egypt will pay the amount over a period of 8-1/2 years in exchange for the Israeli company dropping all other claims resulting from a 2015 arbitration decision.
How fortunate that President Sisi’s government has brought Egypt's economy under control, so they can afford the additional expense.
The International Chamber of Commerce in 2015 ordered Egypt to pay Israel Electric about $1.8 billion in compensation after a deal to export gas to Israel via pipeline collapsed in 2012 after attacks by bully boyz in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula.

Egypt appealed the decision and began discussions on a settlement. The EGPC and EGAS statement said the agreement was reached with government support and as part of efforts to ensure a "conducive investment environment".

Israel’s Delek Drilling and its partner Noble Energy signed a landmark deal early last year to export $15 billion in natural gas from Israeli offshore fields Tamar and Leviathan to a customer in Egypt.
Turnabout being fair play. That’ll support Egypt’s improving economy until their new natural gas fields start delivering.
A Delek Drilling executive said on June 2 that the company hopes to begin commercial sales of natural gas to Egypt by the end of this month. Israeli officials called it the most significant deal to emerge since the neighbours made peace in 1979.

Acosta Is His Own Worst 'Enemy'
[REALCLEARPOLITICS] I’m not going to be buying Ace Newshound Jim Acosta
...CNN's showboating White House correspondent...
’s new book. I’ve already been snookered by a slick carnival barker once, back when I was a young man at the Feast of San Gennaro. No need to pay money twice for the same old sleight of hand.

The grifter’s trick is to show you one thing while making you think you’re seeing another. Acosta is pitching a book called "The Enemy of the People" and he wants you to think he is "the people." He isn’t. Is he "The Enemy of the People"? That’s giving him too much credit, but he is the enemy of the truth.

I’ve already written about Acosta numerous times, and included in my book "The Media Matrix" an essay titled "Jim Acosta and the Hubris of Celebrity Journalism" that first appeared at RealClearPolitics. The premise is simple ‐ that news hounds like Acosta have an entitlement mentality. In other words, they have made the mistake of reading their own positive press and thinking they are indispensable. Actually they are just insufferable.

That was on full display in the excerpt CNN published from Acosta’s book last week. What you get is one part self-righteousness, one part self-serving quotes from anonymous sources, one part presumption of Trump’s guilt, and one part hysteria.

Iraq
Iraq Lifts Nearly 30 Km of Blast Walls from Baghdad
[AnNahar] Iraqi authorities have removed nearly 30 kilometres of concrete blast walls across Baghdad in the last six months, mostly around the capital's high-security Green Zone, a bigwig told AFP.

Since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, T-walls -- thick barriers about six metres tall and one metre wide -- have surrounded potential targets of boom-mobiles or other attacks.

When premier Adel Abdel Mahdi came to power last year, he promised to remove barriers, checkpoints and other security measures to make Baghdad easier to navigate.

"Over the last six months, we removed 18,000 T-walls in Baghdad, including 14,000 in the Green Zone alone," said Staff Lieutenant General Mohammed al-Bayati, the PM's top military advisor.

Hundreds of the security checkpoints that contributed to Baghdad's notorious traffic jams have also been removed.

And according to the Baghdad municipality, 600 streets that had been closed off to public access have been opened in the last six months.

Among them are key routes crossing through Baghdad's Green Zone, the enclave where government buildings, UN agencies and embassies including the U.S. and UK missions are based.

It was long inaccessible to most Iraqis until an order from Abdel Mahdi last year, and families can now be seen picking their way across its manicured parks for sunset pictures.

Iraq is living a rare period of calm after consecutive decades of violence, which for Baghdad peaked during the sectarian battles from 2006 to 2008.

It was followed, in 2014, by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group's sweep across a third of the country and a three-year battle to oust the jihadists from their urban strongholds.

The group still wages hit-and-run attacks against Iraqi security forces and government targets, and Baghdad's authorities are on high alert.

Thousands of the removed T-walls have been placed on Baghdad's outskirts to prevent infiltration by IS sleeper cells, according to Bayati.

Africa Subsaharan
30 Killed in Triple Suicide Bombing in NE Nigeria
[AnNahar] Thirty people were killed late Sunday in a triple suicide kaboom in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, emergency services reported, in an attack bearing the hallmarks of the Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
jihadist group.

Three bombers detonated their explosives outside a hall in Konduga, 38 kilometers (24 miles) from the Borno state capital Maiduguri, where football fans were watching a match on TV.

"The corpse count from the attack has so far increased to 30. We have over 40 people injured," Usman Kachalla, head of operations at the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), said on Monday.

An earlier toll from the blasts, the bloodiest in months, gave 17 dead and 17 maimed.

The attack happened around 9:00 pm (1800 GMT), Ali Hassan, the leader of a self-defence group in the town, said. The owner of hall prevented one of the bombers from entering the packed venue.

"There was a heated argument between the operator and the bomber who went kaboom!," Hassan said by phone.

Two other bombers who had mingled among the crowd at a tea stall nearby also detonated their boom jackets.

Hassan said most of the victims were from outside the soccer viewing center.

"Nine people went titzup, including the operator, and 48 were maimed," Hassan said.

Kachala said the high number of fatalities was because emergency responders had been unable to reach the site of the blast quickly. Nor were they equipped to deal with large numbers of maimed.

"Lack of an appropriate health facility to handle such huge emergency situation and the delay in obtaining security clearance to enable us deploy from Maiduguri in good time led to the high corpse count," he said.

Witnesses also said inadequate facilities and lack of drugs contributed to the high corpse count.

"The people that are currently dying is because of lack of hospital: because some have passed the night bleeding.... even the doctors are complaining that there is no drug," said witness Garba Abdullahi.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the attack bore the imprint of Boko Haram, which has led a decade-long campaign to establish a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria.

The last suicide kaboom was in April this year when twojacket wallah'> exploding trollop female suicide bombers blew themselves up outside the garrison town of Monguno, killing a soldier and a vigilante and injuring another soldier.

Konduga has been repeatedly targeted by suicide bombers from a Boko Haram faction loyal to longtime leader Abubakar Shekau
... the lunatic leader of Boko Haram who has been reported dead at least eleven times, pledged his body and soul to ISIS, told his fighters to hang it up once or twice, and been fired by the Caliph and refused to step down ...
The faction typically carries out suicide attacks against soft civilian targets such as mosques, markets and bus stations, often using young women and girls as bombers. The jihadists are believed to sneak into the town from the group's haven in nearby Sambisa forest.

#1  Best possible use of these people. Every State should do this. They only "reap" from death row. Falun Gong is another pointless heathen cult that deserves no protection or encouragement. A lot of navel gazing and incense, driving people to inactivity and unproductive theology. Soon a religion is formed, and then they want legislation and a say in the State. China doesn't work that way. It can't afford to allow religions and cults to undo what has been built on thousands of corpses and the rubble of churches, mosques and temples. In a way it is only prudent, albeit cruel. By the way, UN hearts bleed for Falun Gong not even knowing or caring WhateverTF it is.

#4  On the plus side ... it probably would not be a horrible way to die, if you are in a situation where they are going to kill you anyway. I had a friend back in Norfolk that harvested organs from organ donors, and they only did it if the patient died a controlled, non-violent death (DNR, etc.), usually under a doctor's supervision. From traumatic deaths like car crashes, they would often just collect bone and skin: they definitely would not harvest organs after a firing squad.

So, if your number comes up, pray that they need organs, not bones and skin.

that will increase the flow of drinkable water into the blockaded enclave.

The new pipeline will enter Gaza at its center, crossing over from the Eshkol Regional Council in Israel to connect to the Strip’s water system, the Ynet news site reported Monday.

There are three pipelines currently carrying freshwater from Israel into Gaza at three sites along the border. In agreements with the Paleostinians, Israel committed to transferring 10 million cubic meters (2.6 billion gallons) of water each year to Gaza, but in practice transfers a bit more, roughly 11.5 million cubic meters (3 billion gallons).

The new pipeline will be the largest yet, and will run alongside one of the old pipes and work in tandem with it.

Construction work began in recent days, and is being conducted under heavy military guard out of fear that Gazook terror groups will open fire on the crews as the pipeline-laying work nears the border.

"Water is a basic thing. There’s an entire population in Gaza that doesn’t want war with Israel, and that population is the majority that is being controlled by Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw,," one unidentified employee on the pipeline crew told Ynet.

"It’s a shame that’s the situation. Most of the people in Gaza are thirsty for water, but also hunger for a normal life and a better future for their children. They’re our neighbors, despite everything, and we can’t ignore what’s happening there."

It is not immediately clear how much more water Israel can actually pump into Gaza, as the water infrastructure in the Strip itself has not been maintained by the territory’s Hamas rulers, and may collapse under the strain of a significant increase in the volume of water passing through it.

Israel and Hamas are said to be engaged in informal talks via third parties on rehabilitating some of the territory’s water and sewage infrastructure, which international organizations have warned have reached the point of collapse. Sewage from Gaza is pumped directly into the Mediterranean untreated, and often is simply released into the street, sparking fears of disease spread in the crowded enclave.

White House confirms Israeli officials not invited to Bahrain workshop
[IsraelTimes] After weeks of uncertainty, American official says US wants ’focus to be on the economic aspect, not the political’.

The White House confirmed on Monday that Israeli officials and ministers will not participate in an upcoming US-sponsored economic workshop in Bahrain, the first phase of the rollout of the Trump administration’s Israel-Paleostinian conflict.

The announcement ends weeks of uncertainty about whether a Jerusalem delegation will participate in the confab, and comes one day after Finance Minister Israel Katz made an argument for why Israel should have a seat at the table.

[KhaamaPress] An Afghan soldier broke out of Taliban

prison in North of the country, three days after he was kidnapped by bandidos forces of Evil from Faryab-Jawzjan highway.

The 209th Shaheen Corps in a statement said the soldier, Gul Rahman, is a soldier of the 6th Infantry Unit of the Afghan Army.

The statement further added that Rahman managed to break out of Taliban prison on Sunday night.

The 209th Shaheen Corps also added that Rahman also took a Taliban fighter with him and handed him over to Andkhoi Intelligence Directorate.
Oh my. Mr. Rahman seems in desperate need of a promotion, or perhaps seconding to a Special Forces unit.
The anti-government armed bandidos forces of Evil have not commented in this regard so far.

Iraq
Missiles hit Iraq base hosting US troops
[Rudaw] Three Katyusha missiles have hit Taji Military Base, north of Baghdad, where US forces are stationed, Iraq's Security Media Cell has reported - the second such attack on a military base in four days.
False flag, Herb?
"A short while ago, three Katyusha missiles fell on Camp Taji," Iraq’s Security Media Cell announced on Monday night.

Camp Taji, about 85 kilometers to the north of the capital Baghdad, hosts US military personnel.

Last Friday, three mortars hit Balad Air Base, which houses F-16 airplanes Iraq has purchased from the US, leading to fire in the dry brush around the camp.

Hoshyar Zebari, senior KDP official and former Iraqi Minister for Foreign Affairs, condemned the "alarming and risky" attacks.

"Rockets & mortars attack #Balad air base hosting Iraqi #F16US fighters, #American technicians & advisors. Today’s mortar attacks on #Taji base also with US & coalition advisors north #Baghdad is alarming & risky game by the perpetrators," Zebari said in a tweet on Monday night.

A May 19 Katyusha rocket struck Iraq’s Green Zone, missing the US embassy by just a mile.

The assailants of the attacks are unknown, but many Iran-affiliated Iraqi Shiite militias are currently active in Iraq and are thought to be responsible.
Good to know.

continue to simmer following attacks on two ships, one Japanese-owned, the other Norwegian-operated, in the Gulf of Oman. The US has accused Iran of attacking the ships ‐ claims Iran have strongly denied
No, no! Certainly not!
Iraq has sought a de-escalation of tensions, repeatedly saying that it wishes to avoid being caught in the crossfire of a possible US-Iran conflict.
No doubt.
The Jerusalem Post adds:
Camp Taji, northwest of Baghdad is one of four locations used by Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve during the war against ISIS. It is a center of training for the US-led coalition that has been fighting ISIS since 2014. Taji was an important center for US forces and an area where detainees were kept in the past. It is a large military complex, essential for training.

#2  I’m just a simple little civilian housewife, Thimp Clusort2035. I’m afraid I have no idea what can and cannot be known in either environment — no doubt some of our considerably more experienced readers can explain it to both of us.

The other possibility, of course, is that they do know, but have no intention of sharing while they’re hunting. Loose lips, and all that. That's one reason we strongly discourage those who know non-open source things from sharing that kind of information in this wide open environment. So if those who know decide not to answer our curiosity, we’ll have to be understanding.

#13  These are unguided rockets. The katyusha, not a missile but a rocket, was always considered a nasty animal. The BM13 platform that fires it can be mounted on a number of truck chassis and is quite modular. Mount the 32 rocket artillery on a fast Isuzu-turbo diesel powered vehicle and equip four (or even 2) extensible stanchions, and you've got a mobile artillery that can send 16 M13 rockets flying within seconds, fold up and get to launch point 2 before the rockets hit.

The rockets themselves are hopelessly inaccurate, but in half dozens can still lay down tonnes of concentrated damage to areas. Weighing around 45 kilos, the rocket is fast and difficult to detect once in the air. The one tell is a singsong of the launch itself, and can be picked up by field acoustic sensors.

The rockets and launchers in question have got to be from Saddam's stockpiles because in the 2003 war these things were heavily used. The rag-heads have made several makeshift launchers for these rockets, including those featuring donkeys ☺, and one which involves four poor bastards holding a steel rail and one unlucky summbitch steadying the rocket itself as it's launched. But all they have to do afterward is hide or run away. Even though hitting anything is pure luck.

Since not many rockets were launched (only 3 were reported ) I think the launch vehicle could be some rag-head variant that allows limited launch capacity and very low signature.

Libya's HoR unanimously approves scrapping General Commander of Libyan Army position
[Libya Observer] The Libyan House of Representatives (HoR), convening in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, voted unanimously to remove Libyan Army General Commander position, which was created by the HoR in Tobruk in 2015.

The front man for the HoR Hamouda Sayala said all of the members who attended Monday session agreed to scrap the position.

The creation of the Army General Commander position in 2015 by Tobruk-based HoR was then described as a role designed to fit Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
and his military ambitions as the Libyan Army did not have such a post since its formation in 1951.

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats Chumbaloni was staring into a hole that was just .45 inch in diameter and was less than three feet from his heavily sweating face ...
the HoR in Tripoli welcomed the peace initiative proposed by the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Fayez al-Sarraj, announcing the formation of a contact committee in that regard.

The HoR also said it will elect next week the presidency of the parliament with the majority vote system.

Al-Sarraj proposed in a presser in Tripoli holding a Libyan Gathering "Multaqa" that will be sponsored by and coordinated with the UNSMIL, in order to gather all Libyan parties that advocate for peace, democracy and stability, excluding those who advocate for dictatorship and have had Libyan blood on their hands.

[AnNahar] The Internal Security Forces said in a statement on Monday that its agents arrested two Syrian suspects for having links to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
terror group and for planning kabooms at religious places.

"As part of preventive security operations carried out by the ISF Information Division in monitoring the activities of terrorist cells, especially those associated with the IS terrorist group, the Division has been able to monitor and identify a resident of south Leb who spreads the ideology of the organization on social media and recruits people for its benefit," said the statement.

The suspect was identified as Z.M. a Syrian living in the Lebanese southern town of Yater, said the statement.

He confessed during investigation to having links to the IS and to having promoted its ideology through a number of online channels and applications.

He said he had links to individuals outside Leb who assisted him in the creation of social networking sites promoting the ideology of the organization.

After a video released of IS leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...the head of ISIS, or what remains of it, and a veteran of the Abu Graib jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us. So far he has been killed at least four times, though not yet by a stake through the heart...
praising the kabooms in Sri Lanka, the suspect said he got a spray can and clandestinely at night sprayed slogans on a wall at the entrance of Yater that said "Grandson of Abu Bakr Baghdadi," and "Islmaic State" at the bottom.

With his partners, he discussed the idea of simulating the Sri Lankan attacks in Leb and targeting churches, hussainia in shiite towns and villages in south Leb including attacks at churches and killing the largest number of worshippers, said the statement.

He said he accessed websites of jihadis and downloaded links that filmed tutorials of how to make improvised bombs for reference.

He had contacts with another Syrian national identified as S.B. (arrested by ISF) whom he recruited for the purpose.

The two men were referred to the judiciary.
The Times of Israel translates some of that as follows:
The Internal Security Forces (ISF) says they "tracked down and identified a man in southern Leb who actively publishes IS propaganda on social media networks and recruits new members" for the jihadist group.

The suspect, a 20-year-old Syrian national from the south Leb village of Yater, was in contact with people abroad who helped him set up social networking sites to disseminate IS propaganda, it says in a statement.

He also downloaded a manual compiled by followers of the jihadist group instructing readers on how to build explosives, the statement adds.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Car explosion hits downtown Qamishli
[Rudaw] A bomb went kaboom! in Qamishli, a city in Hasakah province in northeastern Syria, on Monday afternoon, according to Internal Security Forces of North and Northeastern Syria (NES), amid conflicting reports of injuries and human casualties.

"A car containing a sticky bomb detonated exactly at 1:47 PM today Monday afternoon, July 17, near the General Headquarters of Asayish Forces in Qamishli city. The damage was solely material, without registering any human losses," according to a statement from the Internal Security Forces media centre.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
earlier reports allege that the earth-shattering kaboom caused both material damage and human casualties.

Hawar News, media close to the ruling Kurdish authority in Rojava, reported that the bomb detonated at 1:30 PM, on the north side of the Sony Roundabout, in the centre of Qamishli.

"Some people" were maimed, and surrounding properties were "severely" damaged. A mine was also diffused near the area of the earth-shattering kaboom, the outlet added.

State news agency SANA reported that there were dead and injured civilians due to the bombing in the Qaddour Bek residential neighborhood in Qamishli, without providing details.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor, reported that a van driven by a jacket wallah attempted to break into the General Headquarters of the Asayesh (security) Forces in the Sony Roundabout in Qamishli.

The van, failing to break into the headquarters, exploded outside, injuring 7 civilians including women and kiddies.

Qamishli is under the control of the local Kurdish led administration, and is considered the capital of the self-declared autonomous NES region.
An Nahar adds:
Kurdish-held areas of northeast Syria have been hit by a spate of bombings in recent months, many claimed by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group.

IS has vowed to carry out Dire Revenge attacks for the six-month offensive by Kurdish-led forces that culminated in March in the jihadists' ouster from their last bastion in Syria.

IS fighters retain a presence in Syria's vast Badia desert and various other hideouts, and still claim deadly attacks in territory held by the Syrian Democratic Forces.

According to the Observatory, hundreds of SDF members have been killed in attacks believed to have been carried out by IS sleeper cells since August.

Democrats plot to call Chris Christie, Paul Manafort and first Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski as witnesses
  • [Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Democrats are plotting a new strategy to get witnesses before Congress in their investigation of President Donald Trump
...Perhaps no man has ever had as much fun being president of the US...

  • They will call Trump associates who have never worked in the White House, which would circumvent the president's claim of executive privilege

  • The new witness list could include Corey Lewandowski, Chris Christie, Paul Manafort, and Rick Gates

  • All four played prominent roles in both the 2016 Trump campaign and appeared in special counsel Robert Mueller's report

  • But the White House is arguing executive privilege applies to all Trump advisers and not just those aides who worked in the administration
